In the Op/Ed pages of a recent edition of Quito's daily newspaper "El Comercio" the motivation behind the lawsuit against TexacoChevron is questioned. The editorial insinuates that the real reason behind the lawsuit is "money" and not environmental concerns.

Homosexuals & Lesbians
The acceptance of lesbians and homosexuals is still not very common in Ecuador and there is no legislation that accepts the union of gays in the country. In spite of the fact that recently there is a growing movement for the fight for the rights of diversity and there have been many pro-gay and lesbian marches, resistance is still very large. The macho culture of Latin America requires the man to always show his strong side and not be weak.
Degrading and insulting comments can be made against gays and lesbians that show their affection in public and is something very uncommon in the country. But on the other hand, there are many sites for diversion, organizations and activist groups that can provide areas free to express yourself and your mate and can recommend useful tips to make your stay pleasurable.

Handicapped
The infrastructure for handicapped in Ecuador is lacking. Handicapped nationals as well as foreigners suffer for this. There are few wheelchair ramps or communication facilities for blind or deaf.
However, the kindness of the people is the best tool that Ecuador counts on. It is very common to see handicapped people in the streets being helped by others to move about or get on buses. Also, the rates for the handicapped on all types of transport and services is 50% off.

Senior Citizens and Children
Senior citizens and children receive special treatment in Ecuador. Aside from the fact that they pay half price on tickets and have special places on the different mechanisms of transport and are given preference, in the case of any emergency or catastrophe, they are given preference for medical attention and first aid.
In spite of this, foreigners pay more than nationals. But expenses for children should not be higher than those of an adult. In reference to food, it is very uncommon to find children s menus in restaurants so ordering a whole meal and dividing it between two little ones could be a good alternative and like always, foreigners and tourists are treated with special attention anywhere, so don t worry.
