Women, Gay & Lesbian, Handicapped, Senior Citizen and Children Travelers

In the Op/Ed pages of a recent edition of Quito's daily newspaper "El Comercio" the motivation behind the lawsuit against TexacoChevron is questioned. The editorial insinuates that the real reason behind the lawsuit is "money" and not environmental concerns.

Ecuador is one of the most progressive countries in South America. It is therefore an ideal place to visit for everybody throughout the world. The friendliness of the Ecuadorian people will make you feel welcome. However, certain limitations in infrastructure, culture and laws should be taken into account that could be different from your home country. If you appreciate of them, your stay will be more enjoyable.

Women
It is mostly recommended that women travel in a group because there is a greater risk when you travel alone. Many men will want to take advantage of a woman if they see her alone, above all in Latin American countries where machismo is strong. Generally, foreign women are thought of as more liberated and easier to conquer. If men bother you on the street, ignoring them is an excellent strategy that the local men understand perfectly as a turn down.

If you are in a group of new local friends, you should also not go with a new friend alone to an isolated place or a place where you can be alone (sometimes these friendly invitations can give the impression that you want to sleep with him and he could force you to).

Where ever you are staying, above all if it is a cheap hostel, make sure that your room has a lock on the inside so that nobody may come in and bother you while you are sleeping.
If you are the victim of any type of aggression or pressure by a man, go to the Commissary. For more information on women in Ecuador and support, visit:
