Email & Internet in Ecuador
Internet service in Ecuador has increased in the last few years, so much so that you can find a lot of Internet Café’s and places that provide internet services almost everywhere you may travel. But the speed of the internet in Ecuador still does not reach universal standards and there are few places, like Quito and Guayaquil where you can have optimal navigation.
Rates depend on the place but is generally $1.00 an hour and the city with most internet places is Quito.
However, some hotels let travelers connect their personal computers to telephone lines in the hotel or will let them use hotel computers to connect to the net. Connections in these places are the same as used in the US.

Net2Phone
This type of service is becoming more widespread in Ecuador and it lets you make calls from a computer to the US, Canada, Spain and some countries in South America and Europe. This service is available in almost all of the Internet Café’s in the country or can be done from home, downloading the necessary program from the Internet. This and other services for international conferences via the Internet are half price of the conventional ones but in the majority of cases, the quality is very poor.

Communication Media: Radio, Television and News
The communication media most used in Ecuador are radio, television and newspapers, because they are the ones with greatest reception.
Radio in Ecuador
There are many FM and AM radio stations that have different programs: news, interviews, music, entertainment and curiosities. The stations with most prestige are: Concierto 90.5 FM, Colón 98.9 FM, San Francisco 106.9 FM, Centro 97.7 FM, Visión 91.7 FM, with varied programs. If you are looking for classic rock, you could tune into Proyección 98.1 FM and 96.9 and on AM, the most listened to station is Radio Quito.

Television in Ecuador
Television is another very used type of media. Practically everybody has access to this medium. Main national channels are: Ecuavisa, Teleamazonas, Gamavisión, that have news programs, sports and entertainment for the whole family.
Ecuador also has cable television service. The most widely known cable television companies are: TV Cable, Direct Tv and Univisión. Each companies offers different packages with different prices according to the number of channels the user wants.


Newspapers in Ecuador
The main newspapers in the country are: El Comercio, El Hoy from Quito, El Universo from Guayaquil, Mercurio from Cuenca.
You can also obtain international newspapers in certain hotels but not all.

Magazines in Ecuador
There are also different magazines with different themes, the main ones being: Vistazo, Gestión, with more political-economical content. We also have Diners and some cultural magazines like El Buho, País Secreto, and others.
If the traveler wants to obtain information on music groups and entertainment for children, you can get magazines like: La Onda, Generación XXI, Cosmopolitan, Cosas.
Newspapers as well as magazines can be obtained in kiosks located in the street and in shopping centers.
Prices: Newspapers: $0.35 – 0.50 through the week and weekends between $0.60 – 1.00
Magazines: $ 2.50 – 4.00
