"Buena Moza"

The choral band, Vozteso Ensamble, was formed in August 2001 with a mission to promote the popularity of choral music in Ecuador. Choral music is defined by the sole use of human vocal apparati to produce music.

Vozteso is a hybrid of the Latin voz (voice) and the Italian teso, which means strength. Less auspiciously, the homonym "bostezo" in Spanish means yawn.

The members are professional musicians who have all played in Ecuador's various choral groups. Transcending the confines of traditional choral music by introducing popular music into the genre was the common interest that brought the band members together. "This is a unique experience, especially for a group of people like us who love singing," Vozteso musical director, Juan Carlos Velasco, said. "Sharing our daily lives has let us learn from each other about tolerance, sincerity and friendship."

Band members include: César Espinoza - Tenor 2
Marco Placencia, - Tenor 1
Dhaily Naranjo - Contralto
Mariela Condo - Soprano
Juan Carlos Velasco - Bajo del quintento (bass)

The group prefers to cover Latin American and Ecuadorian popular music, traditional songs, ancient melodies (polifonía antigua) and sacred hymns. Classical music, with its need for at least least 20 voices, is not part of the groups repertoire.

Vozteso's most important performance came in 2002, when they appeared as the official band at the Virgen del Cisne celebrations that took place in the city of Loja in the southern Andes. Ariel Arellano compossed the original song Cantata Bernardo de Legarda especially for Vozteso and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Loja to perform together.

In 2003, the band is scheduled to participate in Quito's Silver Anniversary Celebrations, marking the 25th anniversary of the capital being named a World Heritage City by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Social and Cultural Organization). The group is also performing with the Woman in Dance (Mujeres en la Danza) Festival, the official event to kick off Quito cultural patrimony celebrations.
