Mamá
Vudú began their career in 1992 but it wasn't until
the beginning of 1993 that they began to play in different
bars in Quito and other neighboring cities.
Mamá Vudú's new style of musical expression
went against the paradigms that had been established in
the feeble musical movement in Ecuador, and, because of
this, public response was positive. Their free spirit,
songs and melodies inspired by both new wave and punk
music classified the band as alternative rock, which at
the time was gaining international fame.
In 1994 the group participated in many music festivals
in Quito and a well-known radio station named Mamá
Vudú the best alternative rock band in Ecuador.
They recorded their album, Tropical Brea in 1995
and were quickly gaining more press recognition as one
of the country's most promising new bands. Unfortunately,
for lack of funds, this album was not widely distributed
and was better known in the underground music scene.
In 2000 Mamá Vudú recorded Luna Lombriz
and once again were referred to as Ecuador's most innovative
rock band. Luna Lombriz, which includes songs such
as, "Incéndialo Todo," "Harpón",
and "Oración Matinal," was considered
one of the best albums of the year.
In 2001, Mamá Vudú was invited to play in
two music festivals in Colombia and recorded their third
album, Aeroclub. Incéndialo Todo was named the
second-best song in the history of Ecuadorian rock by
Radio Latina in Quito.
Mamá Vudú's sound was also heard on Spanish
Rock Radio in Austin, Texas in March of this year. The
band is currently playing in Quito and has just come out
with Vortex, their second promotional single.
