The
year 1998 was noteworthy for Quito's
musical scene as a result of the emergence of the group,
La Grupa, and their lofty goal: to study,
rescue and develop traditional Ecuadorian music. Their
goal would be reflected in a fusion of musical
genres including indigenous, Afro-American, montubios
and mestizos with rhythms of contemporary popular music.
The band includes five professional musicians
well renowned locally: Christian Mejia (vocals and song
writer), Ivis Flies (bass, vocals and compositions), Johnny
Ayala (guitar), Danilo Arroyo (drums) and Lindberg Valencia
(marimba).
In 2003, La Grupa participated
in two important musical events. First, the band was included
in the CD, “Quito,Tierra de Luz",
a project of the Municipio de Quito. The compilation CD
celebrated Quito's 25th anniversary of being declared
Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO.
Later in 2003, the band started a new
project, in conjunction with the singer Hipatia Balseca
and sponsored by the Museum de la Ciudad de Quito, named:
“Divas de la Tecnocumbia".
The stated goal of the project is to elucidate the cultural
significance of this emerging mass genre and to experiment
with a new fusion sound.
For this week's MP3 we have an example
of their work, Caderona! Enjoy!
