"Los Culpables"
|
The
cultural and artistic spirit of Cuenca, is evident in
the music of one of her own, Juan Carlos Granda, who
began his musical career in 1994. Mr. Granda's style,
without being fusion, is a mix of rock, blues, funk,
nueva trova, folk and other local rhythms. His music
is far from the mainstream and instead focuses on the
weighty themes that inspire him -- religion, politics,
sex and, of course "love, not the cheap romantic
type, but the real one, raw and imperfect, brutishly
beautiful and human."
Motivated, Granda traveled to Los Angeles in the USA and
Mexico where he perfected his musical style.
In
2001, Granda returned to Cuenca and "found a city
changed and with plenty of cultural activity," he
comments to us. In the many bars and cafes of Cuenca,
Granda found the space to let his voice be heard. He became
part of the musical movement La Trova de los Cuatro
Ríos which tried, with good results, to generate
enthusiasm for its musical scene.
In
2002, Granda accompanied Alejandro Filio, a Mexican singer
of nuevísima trova, in a critically acclaimed
concert in Cuenca. By the end of the year, he finished
recording a demo album of nine original songs, one of
which, "Los Culpables" ("The Guilty
Ones"), is presented here.
