The Dorada Solanda Band was formed in 1997 by inhabitants
of the Quito neighborhood named in honor of Marquise of
Solanda, a distinguished Ecuadorian landowner of the 19th
century who bequesthed her family's lands to the city
to be used for popular housing.
This
band's mission is to identify and promote popular Ecuadorian
music, especially tropical sounds adapted to the band's
instrumentation. The band has interpreted such traditional
songs at "Chullita Quiteño," now the
theme music for Quito Foundation Festivities, as well
as the uniquely Latin American rhythms of sanjuanitos,
pasacalles, danzates, pasillos, yaraví, cumbias
and paseitos.
The
band's 10 members, all longtime music professionals, previously
played in various bands, including those of the Ecuadorian
Army and Royal Navy.
Dorada
Solanda musical director, Alfonso Cabay, previously played
with the Sonora Matancera and Don Medardo y sus Players
bands. For Cabay, "music is culture."
Band
members include: José Zapata, Galo Sevilla and
Darío Cabay, trumpet; Alfonso Cabay and Alfredo
Cabay, saxophone; Luis Brito, tenor sax; Segundo Cabay,
baritone; Jaime y Henry Ortiz and Luis Ernesto, percussion.
Their
material, embracing diverse styles, includes the theme
music for Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World tourist
center) composed in the pasacalle rhythm by Alfonso Cabay
for the City; Los Compadres (The Godparents) in paseito
rhythm; Qué Lindo es mi Quito (How Beautiful Is
My Quito), and many others.
The
Dorada Solanda Band is an honorable and permanent guest
of Mitad del Mundo, and has regularly performed at the
Equatorial attraction's most important festivals, including
the 2003 Spring Equinox Festivities.
