In 2001, three listless adolescents from Quito decided
to get together to ride out the terrible wave of boredom
that had settled over the Ecuadorian capital since 1536.
They entertained themselves with musical instruments which,
they were the first to admit, they could not master. Slowly,
however, they gave birth to an alternative genre that
combines the best of punk and metal, completely MADE IN
ECUADOR.
The name of the band is Amigos de lo Ajeno (Friends of
the Other) and is formed by Hugo Noboa (guitar and vocals),
Sebastián Burbano (vocals and bass) and Miguel
Bustamante (drums, bongos and chorus). The band began
playing in Quito's trendy and seedy Mariscal section where
they gained a loyal following...despite being kicked out
of some clubs. Since then, the band has participated in
the most important local punk and metal music festivals
and have appeared in Ambato and Ibarra, two Andean cities
where this type of music is popular.
Currently, Amigos de lo Ajeno has produced only one CD
which is composed of 14 songs. The title of the CD is:
"El placer de ser la única del grupo que no
es gorda" (The Joy of Being the only one in the Group
that is not Fat). The 250 copies of the literally home
made CD sold out.
The band is working on a second CD. Their mission is
to wage a campaign against "boredom and apathy, ailments
all too common in the adolescents of the capital."
We leave you with the song: "Todo dañan"
(They Ruin Everything). The words tell the story of a
country "where the people who least deserved it received
all the wealth of a nation on a silver platter. These
people then went on to spend, cut, burn and devour all
the treasures leaving only a smoldering nakedness to their
children." Any similarity with a real country, the
band tells us, is purely coincidental.
