Organizer Ana Maria Sevilla tells us more about the race:
When & why was Huairasinchi founded?
"In 1998, the Raid Gauloises adventure race came to Ecuador. The event made us question why there wasn't a similar annual race in Ecuador organized by Ecuadorians. Given the beauty of the country and the incredibly diverse terrain found within such a small area makes it the perfect location for adventure racing. Our idea grew from there until in May 2003 we organized the first Huairasinchi race."
Who is the force behind Huairasinchi?
"Myself, Santiago Lopez, Rodolfo Peralta and Francisco Navarra, founded Huairasinchi. We had known each other for years from the hiking club at university where we were always trekking and hiking together. The concept for Huairasinchi was brought about by our love of spending time in the mountains and our appreciation of Ecuador's unique beauty."

How has Huairasinchi developed since its inception?
"Initially, Huairasinchi was planned as a university race but immediately groups other than students showed their interest in participating. In the first year, 30 teams participated in the 85 km two day race. We received great feedback from Huairasinchi - 1 and it confirmed our belief when people repeatedly contacted us looking for more information and ways to get involved. Five months later we organized the second more challenging race over a rugged 110km course with 30 teams. Huairasinchi is now in its third year and has grown considerably with 35 teams participating over a more competitive course. The course includes mountain biking, trekking, canoeing, orienteering and navigational elements through testing terrain and altitudes of up to 4000metres."
Tell us more about Huairasinchi - 3
"Teams of four people (at least one member of each sex) race through a series of obligatory control points with the goal of arriving at the finish in the fastest time. This year, competitors raced for 72 hours over a distance of 220 kilometers. The race was divided into various sections comprising of mountain biking, trekking and canoeing through various ecosystems such as rainforest, coast and high altitude volcanoes."
