Off to the side is the café shop, a virtual ethnographic museum collection of skirts, baskets, the cerbatanas (dart throwing weapons spiked with curare), indigenous bodily adornments, colorful jewelry, knick-knack carvings and Supay figures. The shop is run by Sinchi Sacha Foundation, a group dedicated to marketing native arts and crafts to foreign visitors in an upscale setting. El Mirador is museum, handcraft shop, bar, restaurant and lookout point-an eclectic and quirkly little place that succinctly presents some of the best of Ecuadorian arts, sightseeing, dining and shopping under one techo.
As the evening unfolds, a spectacular full moon rises over the Cayambe volcano, bathing the mountain and the valley floor in its yellowish light, while the bar slowly fills with cliente: the assorted couples, the three poets, the four friends, the politicians, the painter.

They savor their drinks and delicacies, light meals of colorful salads, empanadas (turnovers), quesadillas and other comida tipica. The strains of San Juanito, Pasillo, Bolero, Son, Caribbean and Latin favorites merge with the relaxed conversation, creating a cheer ful, cozy ambience. The gracious
manager, ever attentive to his guests-his friends-visits our table for a drink.
Later we walk out into the brisk night air with a breeze blowing in from the valley, leaving the pleasant chatter, lively music, and artsy decor behind. But as sure as Orellana will continue to enjoy the view from El Mirador, we will return.
