Dry Climate
Dry climate is characterized by little annual rainfall, less than
500 mm. There is only one rainy season that goes from January to April.
The average temperature for this type of climate is 24.0 C. This climate
is mostly found on the peninsula of Santa Elena and on Cape San Lorenzo.
The city of Salinas, located on the Santa Elena peninisula, has the
least amount of annual precipitation (126 mm) and an average temperature
of 23.40 C.
Tropical Savanna
The climate of the tropical savanna is found to the north and east
of the peninsula of Santa Elena. It covers the western most zone of
the provinces of Guayas (except the peninsula of Santa Elena), Manabi
and the southernmost parts of Esmeraldas. It has an approximate rainfall
of between 500 and 1,000 mm a year with rains concentrated between
December and May. The dry tropical forests and ceibos are typical
of this climatic zone. The average temperatures are around 26 0 C.
Tropical Monsoon
The next climate is the tropical monsoon which extends from the city of Esmeraldas down to the gulf of Guayaquil. The rains in this region are between 1,000 and 2,000 mm a year mainly occurring between December and May. The vegetation in this zone is dense rainforest with an average temperature between 23 and 27 0 C.
Mesothermic Climate
The wet mesothermic climate can be found on the western and eastern
slopes of the Andes Mountains (cloud forests). It is a climatic change
between the mountains and the two regions found on either side of
the Andes (Coast and Amazon). Mesothermic conditions are found at
altitudes between 500 and 1,500 meters and annual rainfalls are from
2,000 to 4,000 mm. The rain is constant creating only one rainy season.
The temperature varies depending on the altitude and the vegetation
is almost like a rainforest. These unique mega-diverse forests are
unfortunately being destroyed by deforestation.
