Spaniards for one more year. On December 6, 1534, Sebastian
de Benalcazar founded the city on the ancient ruins of
Shyris. This year, the fiestas begin on November 27. The

This is the most important religious festival of Cuenca,
and for many, one of the most attractive festivals of the
country. The parade is made up of thousands of children
of all ages, dressed in costumes that recall the birth of
baby Jesus. This year it will begin at 10:00 and it last four hours.

Throughout the world, December 24 and 25 are Christmas Eve
and Christmas. The streets and the houses are filled with
lights and decorations related to Christmas. Christmas trees
are set up in the houses and small nativity scenes called
“pesebres” or “nacimientos (births)”.
On the night of the 24th, the Christmas dinner is held with
the whole family, they eat turkey and at midnight, they
pass out the gifts to the little ones.
