After lunch we will drive to the trailhead of the Santa Lucia Lodge, about a 3 hour drive. We will take a leisurely hike of under 2 miles, birding along the way up to the lodge which sits on top of the Andes in the cloud forest, to arrive before dinner in time to take a hot shower and dinner by candlelight.

Day 3 An early start before breakfast birding around the lodge to see Empress, Green-crowned and Fawn-breasted Brilliant, Booted Racket-tail, Violet tailed Sylph, Sparkling Violet-Ear, Ecuador has 130 species of hummingbirds.

Day 5 A visit to the fantastic Cock-of-the-Rock Lek. This is a 1-1/2 hour walk to reach the lek location, but is well worth it. A sight you will never forget as the 30+ species perform their dance to attract females, it will be the highlight of your trip.

Day 6 Today, if you feel energetic you can hike to the birding tower a 3 hour hike uphill to see some of the higher elevation birds …Black-chested, Buzzard, and Crested Eagle. Plate-billed Mountain Toucan, Beautiful Jay Spillman’s Tapaculo and Tawney-breasted Tinamou. The view from the tower is spectactular with a 360 degree view of many volcanoes.

This reserve is along the Omachaca River where we will see …Torrent Ducks, White-capped Dipper, Torrent Tyrannulet, Choco Toucan,Rufous-breasted and Crowned Motmots. Around the lodge the birding is top-notch, with species like Torrent Duck, Gray-breasted Mountain Toucan, and mixed flocks teeming with tyrranulets, jays, mountain tanagers, hemispingus and brush finches.
